Why this list exists
Almost everything written about body contouring is written to encourage you to book. That produces a strange gap in the available information: it is genuinely hard to find a plain account of who should not have this treatment. Since the screening conversation happens at every consultation anyway, there is no reason it should not happen here first. If something below applies to you, it is better to know now than after you have arranged your schedule around four appointments.
Absolute contraindications: metal and electronic implants
EMSculpt NEO generates a strong electromagnetic field and delivers radiofrequency energy. Cardiac pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, and neurostimulators are absolute contraindications. The field can interfere with device function, and this is not a risk anyone should accept for an elective aesthetic treatment. Metal implants in or near the treatment area are equally disqualifying: joint replacements, plates, screws, rods, surgical clips, and intrauterine devices depending on their material and position. Copper IUDs in particular need to be raised. Tell us about every implant you have, including ones you consider old and irrelevant.
Pregnancy, and the postpartum window
Treatment is not performed during pregnancy. After delivery the question is timing rather than a permanent exclusion: we generally want you at least three to six months postpartum and cleared by your own obstetric provider, because the abdominal wall and connective tissue need time to recover before being driven through supramaximal contraction. If you are breastfeeding, raise it, it factors into the timing conversation. Rushing this is the most common mistake postpartum patients want to make, and the reason to wait is that the tissue you would be treating is still changing.
Conditions that require clearance rather than a flat no
Several situations do not automatically rule treatment out but do require your treating physician's input first. Active hernia at or near the treatment site is a significant one, particularly for abdominal treatment, and it needs assessment before anything else. Recent surgery in the area, active malignancy, seizure disorders, bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy, and significant cardiac or pulmonary disease all warrant a conversation with the doctor managing that condition. So does uncontrolled diabetes, where impaired healing and altered sensation change the risk picture. Bring your medication list.
When the treatment is safe but simply wrong for the goal
This is the largest category and it is not about safety at all. If your BMI is above roughly thirty-five, or if the abdominal fullness you dislike is visceral (the firm, deep fat that sits around the organs rather than the soft pinchable layer), radiofrequency will not reach it and you will be disappointed. If your main problem is loose or excess skin, no non-invasive device removes skin; that is what abdominoplasty exists for and we do not perform surgery. If you want to lose thirty pounds, this is not a weight-loss treatment. And if you are hoping to address cellulite, that is a different mechanism entirely and this device does not treat it.
What the screening conversation is actually like
It takes a few minutes and it is not adversarial. We go through your medical history, your implants and devices, your medications, any surgery in the area, and what you are actually hoping to change. Then Dr. Bromberg examines the area, because a good deal of this cannot be settled by conversation alone, whether fat is subcutaneous or visceral, whether there is a hernia, how much skin laxity is present. If any of it rules you out, you will be told plainly and, where we can, pointed toward whoever is better placed to help. The consultation is free, and a clear no is a legitimate outcome of it.
