The confusion is entirely understandable
The names are similar, both devices come from the same manufacturer, both use HIFEM electromagnetic technology, and both are described as building muscle without effort on your part. Patients regularly arrive having researched one when they needed the other, and searches for things like "EMSculpt for the pelvic floor" turn up constantly. The distinction is actually simple once stated plainly, and getting it right determines whether you book the right thing.
EMSculpt NEO: body contouring, with an applicator
EMSculpt NEO treats external muscle groups, abdomen, flanks, glutes, thighs, arms, calves. An applicator is positioned against the area and delivers two energies at once: radiofrequency, which heats subcutaneous fat to the point where fat cells break down, and HIFEM, which drives the underlying muscle through supramaximal contractions. It is the only one of the two that reduces fat. Sessions run about thirty minutes per area, and the standard course is four. If your concern is how a part of your body looks or how strong it is, this is the device.
Emsella: the pelvic floor, in a chair
Emsella is a chair. You sit on it fully clothed for twenty-eight minutes while the electromagnetic field passes through the pelvic floor and contracts the entire muscle group, roughly eleven thousand two hundred supramaximal contractions in one session. There is no applicator and nothing to undress for. It has no radiofrequency component and therefore does no fat reduction whatsoever. It is cleared for urinary incontinence, and it is the device for leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or lift, for sudden urgency and overactive bladder, and for pelvic floor weakness after childbirth, after prostate surgery, or through menopause. The standard course is six sessions.
The quick way to tell which you need
Ask what is actually bothering you. If the answer describes an appearance or a strength problem in a visible area, a stomach that will not flatten, arms that jiggle, a flat backside, a core that gives out. That is EMSculpt NEO. If the answer involves your bladder, leaking, urgency, or a pelvic floor that stopped doing its job, that is Emsella. If you find yourself saying "both, honestly," you are not unusual, and you are describing the reason we run the two together for a lot of patients.
When both is genuinely the right answer
The abdominal wall and the pelvic floor are two surfaces of the same pressure system. Pregnancy, ageing, and long-term deconditioning tend not to affect one and leave the other alone, which is why a patient with abdominal separation frequently also has a pelvic floor that is not holding, and why treating only the visible half can leave the underlying problem in place. Where both are involved we usually run them in parallel. The appointments are short, neither requires recovery, and they address opposite ends of the same cylinder.
What neither of them is
Neither is a weight-loss treatment. Neither treats cellulite. Neither removes loose skin. Neither is a substitute for a diagnosis if something is genuinely wrong, significant prolapse, a hernia, or a neurological cause of incontinence all need identifying before anyone puts you on a device. The consultation exists to work out which of these you need, whether you need either, and whether something else entirely is going on. Sometimes the answer is that you should be seeing a different kind of specialist, and we would rather say that.
